Main Memory-The RAM

Definition

RAM is a IC(Integrated Circuitry) type volatile memory who’s full form is Random Access Memory. The Random word in the name signifies that the piece of information on the RAM can be accessed from any part. It don’t cares that where was previous information. RAM contains the most important data needed by running processes of the CPU. It is the fast, costly and small memory. That’s why it also named as the main memory of the computer system.

Types of RAM

The following are some common types of RAM:

  • SRAM(Static random access memory)
It is commonly used for cache which is fastest memory lies between RAM and Processor. It is generally made up of transistors.
  • DRAM: (Dynamic random access memory)
This type of memory is used where memory refreshing is required with higher rate because it contains transistors and capacitors.
  • DDR SDRAM(Double data rate synchronous dynamic RAM)
It is same as SDRAM except greater speed.
  • SDRAM(Synchronous dynamic random access memory)
SDRAM is about five percent faster than EDO RAM. It is the most common form in desktops today.
  • EDO-DRAM(Extended data-out dynamic random access memory)
. It is about five percent faster than FPM
  • FPM DRAM: (Fast page mode dynamic random access memory)
It is a DRAM type memory.

Working

RAM as name implies is random access memory in which data is stored in the form of memory cells that can be accessed in random order. The data is searched in each memory cell until the needed data is found. If data is not found then it is brought to the RAM for future use.

A RAM is an integrated circuit (IC) made of millions of transistors and capacitors, similar to a microprocessor. In the most of cases computer memory is consist of transistor and a capacitor pairing to represents a single bit of data. The capacitor holds the bit of information and transistor acts as a switch to control circuitry on the memory chip, so as to read data from capacitor or to change the ddata of the capacitor.

A capacitor act as a small bucket to store electrons. In order to store the binary information 1 in memory the capacitor is filled with the electrons and to store 0 it is emptied. But ther is a leak problem so for this either the CPU or the memory controller has to recharge all of the capacitors holding a 1 before they discharge. In order to recharge the capacitor the memory contoller needs to read the capacitor with data. This is called as refereshing of the memory and it occurs thousands of time in second

Criteria for buying the RAM

While going for the RAM we have keep in mind the following points -

Vendor Selection

Go for the reputed and fixed vendor for better quality and assurance of the product

Type of work computer has to do

  • For gaming go for faster, latest memory
  • As a professional go for best

Memory Size

Memory are of 2GB and higher in these day so you must have to decide the size if the memory for your use

Technical Support

We must have to check out the technical support provided by the vendor with the terms and conditions.

Motherboard – An Introduction

Definition

Motherboard is the most important part of the computer system which controls the working of the all devices connected to it. It is an electronic system fixed on printed circuit board which has number of connectors to connect the other devices to it.

History

When computers comes into existence at that time computer components were connected by some circuitry board, so that each connector linked to its corresponding connector.

At the end of 1990s motherboards comes with the facility to support the other devices such as storage media, audio/video cards etc.

Working

Motherboards are of rectangular shape. There are some standard cases on the motherboard so as to fit the other devices. Here we are going to point out some important components of the motherboard as given and shown below -

Mother Board Parts

Mother Board Parts

  • BIOS(Basic Input/Output System) is to control the basic function of the computer especially during booting time
  • South & North Bridge combined to form the logic system as part of the chip set
  • Sata socket is for connecting the Sata-Drive.
  • PCI & AGP slots are for additional devices as Video/Sound cards.
  • IDE is the slot to connect the hard derive.

Criteria for buying the motherboard

While going for the motherboard we have keep in mind the following points -

Vendor Selection

Go for the reputed and fixed vendor for better quality and assurance of the product

Type of work computer do

  • For gaming go for fastest processor, latest chip set and audio and video output
  • As a professional go for best and expandable motherboard

Power Management

A motherboard usually run at about 30 watt of power. For economic reason we must have to go for better power manageable motherboard

Technical Support

We must have to check out the technical support provided by the vendor with the terms and conditions.

Video Cards – The informative page

Definition

For the cool sensation to our eyes, we need a clear and beautiful picture. We come in the contact with number of display devices such as T.V., Monitors, TFT, LCDs etc.We are going to discuss about the Video cards which are mostly used in the computer display systems.
Video cards are the devices which are aims to generate the visual seen by making the use of translators. The video cards, graphic cards, display adapters all are same and there names are used interchangeably.

Working of Video cards

The computer screen consist of tiny dot called as the pixels. There are millions of pixels on the display screen. to display the image CPU sends some binary information to the tranlator and translator send it to the screen. The translator decides to turn on/off the pixel. On the is of the input from CPU translator control the brightness of the pixel and in this way we get the image on the screen.

Description of Video Card

A Video device is almost rectangular in shape. It has number of slots for input/output. It is fixed on an expansion slot on the motherboard of the computer. Video cards are commonly of PCI, AGP and PCIe formate depending on the needs of display.

Criteria for selecting a Video card

The Vedio Cards plays important to qualitify the output of the CPU in visual form. So, while going for a the Video Card you must keep following points in your mind -

  • Applications you runs
    • For running 3-D games go for latest Video-Card
    • For running 2-D applications all todays Video-Cards works
  • Know your system
    • For older system go for maximum with both chip and graphic card
    • For running 2-D applications all todays Video-Cards works
    • Check your PC and input devices and be assured that they matches
    • Check whether your sytem is upgradable
  • Check the features of the Video-Card
    • If it has its own GPU(Graphical processing unit)
    • Video cards with GPU are faster
    • More the memory of card better it works
  • Check your PC and input devices and be assured that they matches
    • Check if the slots are available on your CPU for graphic-card
    • Check input/output slots
  • Check whether your sytem is upgradable
    • Be assure that your Computer support the new graphic card
